Understanding how our skin communicates
Our skin is a living organ and works symbiotically with the rest of our body. It responds to our diet, lifestyle and environment as well as offering a reflection of our physical and endocrine health.
Many of us have experienced the appearance of dark circles around our eyes when we’re sleep deprived, chapped lips when we’re dehydrated or weak and brittle nails because we are low in essential minerals. These are physical signs and messages that ask us to observe oursleves, pay attention, listen and respond accordingly, with thoughtfulness and compassion.
We are good at masking these signs with make-up or brightening creams, but it’s worth taking the time to understand what your body is trying to tell you. Dark eye circles might not just be a sign that you’ve had one too many late nights, but can be a sign of a sluggish lymphatic system, poor circulation or fluid retention, indications of longer term, serious or detrimental health issues. These signs can also reflect more than just our physical health, but our mental and emotional wellbeing. We know that when the stress hormone cortisol is released, it can have detrimental effects on our skin like triggering acne breakouts. So when we break out with acne, we can listen and translate that to stress factors in our lives that our skin, body, and mind, are asking for us to resolve.
When we tune into these messages we can view ourselves in a more holistic light and hopefully gain greater insight into our own health and wellbeing.
