Three ways the summer heat can affect our body

Summer is upon us, the sun shines brighter, hotter and longer than at any other time of the year and temperatures soar. We dance and play and swim and soak up the energy that the longer days provide, but how are our bodies affected by this summer heat and how can we help soothe any disruptions caused? 

 
 

• Sleep Quality

As temperatures go up at night, sleep quality can deteriorate. When it's too hot we end up tossing and turning throughout the night, waking up fatigued, fuzzy headed and not fully rested. Swap heavy duvets and pjs for thinner bedding and choose cooling fabrics with natural fibres such as silk and linen. If possible fully open your windows and doors to create a through breeze of fresh air and consider using a fan. Make sure you stay hydrated throughout the day and create calming bedtime rituals to help you fall into a peaceful slumber more easily. 

 

• Pollen & Pollution

The flowers, trees and grasses around us are in full bloom which means there is a much higher quantity of pollen in the air than at any other time of year - affecting even mild allergy sufferers with symptoms such as sneezing and itchy eyes. Building up resistance to local pollen types is a good idea so try eating local honey throughout the year and try to avoid going outside on high pollen count days; if you do go out, the end of the day typically has a lower count. Higher temperatures also decrease air quality, polluted air can affect our skin, lungs and heart so try to avoid heavily polluted areas at the hottest times of the day. 

 

•  Higher heart rate

Our body's core temperature is higher in the hot summer months so our bodies have to work harder to pump this warm blood from our core out to the skin's surface, basically serving as an inbuilt cooling system. This is why it feels like our heart is beating faster and harder when we exercise in the heat. Try and exercise in the morning or evening when temperatures are a little cooler and always remember to stay thoroughly hydrated and protect your skin from the sun's damaging rays.
